Announcements/Prayer Requests:

  • Prayers for future of The Jones AO – want to keep it going, but need fresh/consistent leadership to carry the mantle forward. Many Pax are in seasons of life that make it challenging to commit to AOQ duties.

Devo:

  • Cisco saw a large majestic hawk watching us from a light pole just as the sun was rising, which was the perfect intro to the brief devo YHC had thought of:

Do not toil to acquire wealth;
be discerning enough to desist.
When your eyes light on it, it is gone,
for suddenly it sprouts wings,
flying like an eagle toward heaven.

– Proverbs 23:4-5

Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us…
if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

– Psalm 61:8,10c

  • Reminder not to set your heart on wealth (big or small) as your source of security or comfort, because it can fly away when you least expect it as easily as an eagle (or a hawk). YHC said this primarily as a reminder to self. There seems to be a tendency for Americans to “toil to acquire wealth” so we can rest later, and set our hearts on that as our refuge and comfort/security, whereas the Bible tells us to set our hearts on God as our refuge, and rest now, even while we work.

Moleskin:

  • This was a duplicate of Body Builders Reprise from 20210629; we didn’t get as far this morning because all of the pax were feeling the heat/humidity, and a bit out of shape from lack of F3 participation recently due to other obligations. All things considered, it was a good solid effort from everyone. YHC still loves this workout and hopes to recycle it many times again in the future.

  • Great work from everyone today! This workout was recycled from YHC’s birthday Q in 2018 (in which we did 31 reps of every exercise, and did 31-yard jailbreaks in between). Knowing that YHC is severely deconditioned from a 2-year break from F3 while we had little kids at home, I opted for a lower number of reps and settled on 24 to match today’s date, but quickly realized that 24 of the weighted exercises might still be too much, so dropped weighted reps to 12. It was still a good workout.
  • Quote of the day: “I almost threw up.” – Nacho Libre, immediately after he won the race at end of workout. Music to YHC’s ears. 🙂

  • YHC was feeling the pain this morning after being out of pocket with two young boys at home for the past couple years. Trying to get back into the gloom more now that they are sleeping through the night and since the workout time has been switched back from 5am to 6am. The Pax were gracious with my need to break up many of the exercises into groups of 5 or 10 reps at a time to get the full count completed.  I picked up this Q slot late last night and opted to recycle a previous workout for simplicity, but forgot that it was originally a Saturday (60 minute) workout. Realizing that made us all feel a little bit better about not finishing the whole pyramid, let alone having time for Mary. Good effort by all!

Devo: Don’t follow your heart

  • YHC was struck by this passage in Numbers chapter 15 last week:
    • The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the people of Israel, and tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. And it shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord, to do them, not to follow after your own heart and your own eyes, which you are inclined to whore after. So you shall remember and do all my commandments, and be holy to your God. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God: I am the Lord your God.”
  • Our culture says follow your heart and be true to yourself, but in this passage God says not to follow your heart, but instead to follow God’s commandments. He knows what’s really best for us (since he invented us), plus he has the authority to tell us what to do (since he owns us).
  • Life application: Sometimes YHC struggles at work to stay focused and not wander off on rabbit trails through Wikipedia, Facebook, Amazon, etc. I can clearly see my heart “whoring after” things that really won’t satisfy me. I need God’s intervention to change my desires and remind me of what’s true and worthwhile.

Moleskin:

  • YHC decided to take the mile easy this month to see if it left more energy for the remaining exercises. It seemed to work for Dorothy Mantooth (he hit a PR today), but YHC has been posting less regularly and doing almost no merkins this month, so I still got a lower score than last time.
  • Fastest mile was 8:51.

Pledge and COT

Devo

  • YHC has been re-reading a book on personal productivity called What’s Best Next (by Matt Perman), and challenged the PAX with three quotes from it:
  • 1.) “We weren’t made to simply respond to stuff all day, but to take action and move things forward. If we don’t give attention to the discipline of personal effectiveness but instead let the flow of events determine what we do, we will likely fritter ourselves away doing all sorts of urgent things that come our way while never getting to the truly important things.” (p.21)
    • Challenge: Take action and move things forward today.
  • 2.) Efficiency is not the answer. “It doesn’t matter how efficient you are if you are doing the wrong things in the first place. More important than efficiency is effectiveness – getting the right things done.” (p.43)
    • Challenge: Make sure you’re getting the right things done.
  • 3.) Excluding God is the ultimate in unproductivity. “If you get everything you want in this life, but do it apart from God and receive no eternal value from what you’ve done, have you been productive? Not in the slightest. Productivity cannot be accomplished apart from Christ. ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5).” (p.56)
    • Challenge: Make sure the things you’re doing have eternal value and won’t die with you.

Moleskin:

  • YHC learned yesterday that The Jones should expect an influx of up to 30 PAX with the Tour de Charleston, so modified the workout to be couponless for simplicity. Everything seemed to work well. Each jailbreak + walk-back took about 2 minutes total. The PAX loved/hated the workout. 🙂
  • Welcome FNG “Flat Tire.” Before we even got to the naming part of the COT, he spoke up during the announcements to share a fat tire biking opportunity, and thus was named. He’s a Coast Guard member who has a 10-month-old baby at home. Lives in Summerville. Captain Ron brought him.
